All set for the surf season: devolo co-operates with cable network operator ewt

Product bundle with cable modem and the devolo MicroLink dLAN Starter Kit for fast Internet throughout the house - via the existing 230V wiring

Aachen, May 19, 2005—The Aachen, Germany-based devolo AG announces their co-operation with the Augsburg and Berlin-based cable network operator ewt, the leading provider of fast Internet over TV cable. The result of the co-operation is a product bundle offering high-speed Internet access over the household electricity circuit. The package consists of a cable modem and two devolo MicroLink dLAN adapters and makes broadband Internet access available throughout the whole house over the household electrical wiring. The MicroLink dLAN technology from devolo is based on the HomePlug standard which transforms every plug socket in the house into an Internet access point—without the need of any new cables or wireless equipment.

On offer to customers in Berlin will be a bundle with ewt’s cable modem and the devolo MicroLink dLAN set. The installation of these components is particularly simple: Internet access is available to ewt customers via the TV cable connection. The cable modem has to be connected to the electrical wiring which the serves as a network. This is done with the help of the devolo dLAN adapter which is plugged into the nearest available 230V power socket. With the aid of a further dLAN adapter, every other power socket in the household becomes an Internet access point. Unlike wireless networks which are easily accessed from outside, the MicroLink dLAN adapters offer powerful DESpro encryption.

“No drilling, no dust and no mess; the existing electrical power sockets are transformed into a powerful network for Internet access over the TV cable from any room”, explains Patrick Schwaab, project leader at ewt breitbandnetze GmbH. ewt already supplies over 300,000 German households with high-speed Internet and provides over 200,000 IP telephony connections. “Unlike wireless networks there are no disturbances to data transfer caused by thick walls or concrete floors,” adds Heiko Harbers, CEO of devolo AG in Aachen, Germany.

This combination from ewt and devolo demonstrates how well suited HomePlug technology is to operation with cable modems. As opposed to conventional network cabling, dLAN technology has the advantage of unlimited access throughout the whole house since power sockets are generally available in every room. The HomePlug concept also offers advantages over the alternative wireless LAN technology. For example, there are no restrictions on operating range because of the walls in large multi-storey buildings. Additional equipment for the amplification of radio signals is simply unnecessary.
