Question:
What does ADSL2+ mean?

Answer:
From a technical point of view, ADSL2+ is a further development of the DSL standard, the principle improvement being faster data rates and greater range for DSL connections. The improvement in range enables network providers to offer ADSL to a greater number of potential customers, whereas the improved data rates enable new services such as the transmission of high-definition TV (HDTV) over the Internet. For instance, videos and entire films are available in real time over ADSL2+. Example: A file of 750 MB can be downloaded in just five minutes.

back

Question:
What makes the dsl+ 1100 so well suited to telephony?

Answer:
The IP data packets that contain voice data are priority-handled in the Internet. This minimises the run time of the packets between sender and receiver. The voice packets are not queued like other data packets; instead, they are prioritised and sent directly into the Internet.

back

Question:
How can I use the dsl+ 1100 duo to telephone over the Internet?

Answer:
There are 3 different possibilities:
  • With a softphone, i.e. a computer program that simulates a telephone. A soundcard and headset are additionally required for this. The disadvantage is that the computer always has to be switched on to telephone.
  • With an IP telephone, which is not to be confused with a normal land-line telephone (analogue or ISDN). IP telephones are based on a completely different platform and convert spoken words into IP data packets. These packets are then routed over the Internet, which is a packet-orientated network. An IP telephone is connected directly to the dsl+ 1100 duo via an Ethernet cable.
  • Standard land-line telephones (analogue/ISDN), including cordless DECT telephones, can also be connected with the help of a VoIP ATA (analogue terminal adapter). This adapter is connected to the dsl+ 1100 duo and converts the signals that are intended for the land-lines into IP data packets for routing over the Internet.

Answer:
The USB interface can only be used to connect to a computer. This is because it is a USDN client interface.

back

Question:
Is the USB interface a USB2.0 interface?

Answer:
The dsl+ 1100 duo has a USB1.1 client interface, which is compatible to USB2.0.

back

Question:
What cables do I have to buy to connect a dsl+ 1100 duo?

Answer:
None, everything you need is included.

back

Question:
How high are the maximum gross and net transfer rates over the connection with a dsl+ 1100 WLAN?

Answer:
The dsl+1100 WLAN supports the WLAN standards IEEE 802.11b with an 11Mbps gross bandwidth and IEEE 802.11g with a gross bandwidth of 54 Mbps. Net transfer rates with the g standard are ca. 26 Mbps.

back

Question:
Is there currently a faster WLAN data transfer rate that the 54 Mbps offered by IEEE 802.11g?

Answer:
IEEE 802.11g++ is a technique that provides a so-called “Turbo Mode” for the WLAN standard IEEE 802.11g. Special methods of acceleration (frame bursting, packet aggregation) are used to increase the maximum gross data transfer rates to 125 Mbps—compared to 54 Mbps with the normal IEEE 802.11g. This results in an increase in maximum net data transfer rates by about 35 percent from ca. 25 Mbps to ca. 34 Mbps.
If several devices in a WLAN radio cell all support the 802.11g++ Turbo Mode, then they can communicate at a faster rate with one another. There are, however, slight disadvantages for other devices within the radio cell that do not support Turbo Mode.

back

Question:
Does the dsl+ 1100 WLAN have a WLAN Turbo Mode?

Answer:
Yes! With the IEEE 802.11g++ Turbo Mode (this is not a standard), the devices can achieve gross data transfer rates of up to 125 Mbps. This corresponds with a net bandwidth of ca. 34 Mbps.

back

Question:
Does devolo offer a WLAN client, too?

Answer:
No. The dsl+ 1100 WLAN is compatible with all current WLAN clients that meet the standard IEEE 802.11b/g. Also compatible are WLAN clients with the Turbo Mode g++, available in stores.

back

Question:
Can I use the dsl+ 1100 WLAN with several wireless laptops at once?

Answer:
The dsl+ 1100 WLAN features an integrated WLAN access point, so it is possible for multiple WLAN clients (laptops, PDAs, computers) to connect simultaneously.

back

Question:
What do I have to do to stop outsiders from accessing the wireless connection between my laptop and the dsl+ 1100 WLAN? What methods of encryption does the dsl+ 1100 WLAN support?

Answer:
The first time that the device is installed, an encrypted wireless connection is established automatically. WEP, WPA or WPA2 can be used, depending on the methods of encryption that are supported by the WLAN clients. The highest priority is given to WPA2, then WPA and then WEP.

back

Question:
I would like to access the Internet via the dsl+ 1100 WLAN with a wireless laptop, and I don’t have a stationary PC. Can I set up the dsl+ 1100 WLAN directly from my laptop over wireless?

Answer:
Yes! There is no need of a cable connection to the computer for the first-time installation.
