General dLAN® FAQs
Show fewer
Will the devolo solution work if the devolo adapters are on different electrical circuits in the house?
Yes. So long as there is only one electricity meter for the house, then devolo adapters generally can be plugged into any of the sockets related to the house.
Up
Which network device can I connect to the dLAN® adapter?
You can connect any commonly used network device to a dLAN® adapter, such as desktop computers, laptops, routers, modems, televisions, set-top boxes, NAS hard drives, game consoles etc. The device just has to have a common network connector that conforms to the IEEE 802.3 standard.
Up
Can I also transmit (stream) videos, such as IPTV, via the dLAN®?
Yes, the bandwidth of dLAN® is sufficient for transmitting even high-definition (HD) videos. To enable interruption-free playback even if other data are transmitted at the same time, dLAN® adapters support data prioritisation (QoS).
Up
What does "Easy Pairing" mean for the dLAN® AV Adapters?
All adapters are shipped from the factory with the standard password, "HomePlug AV". To increase security in the network, we recommend changing this password. The "Easy Pairing" feature makes doing so as easy as pressing the buttons on the devices.
Up
How many dLAN® adapters can I use in one network?
Up to 64 dLAN® adapters can be operated in one network.
Up
Does devolo also offer extensive technical support for products with Mac/Linux support?
Yes. Of course. As they are for Windows, basic MAC or Linux skills are required.
Up
Which operating systems are the dLAN® adapters compatible with?
Most dLAN® adapters can be used in any operating system. The software included with delivery supports all Windows versions starting with Windows 98, Linux and Mac OS X.
Up
What are the prerequisites for using dLAN®? Where are the limits?
dLAN® works throughout the entire mains supply network of the house or apartment, regardless of whether the building is old or new. Of course, the network has to be on the same wiring, and the wire length must not exceed 300 meters. However, different phases are not a problem. Power meters attenuate the signal strongly, but do not necessarily block it.
Up
Can I use dLAN® to connect a modem and splitter?
Unfortunately, this is not possible. No IP signal is transmitted between the DSL splitter and modem. This conversion is not made until the signal reaches the modem; therefore, the communication between the splitter and modem cannot take place via dLAN®.
Up
Do I need an Internet connection for dLAN® adapters? Does dLAN® provide Internet from the wall outlet?
dLAN® adapters transfer the existing signal to the power line, but cannot replace Internet access from a provider. dLAN® allows you to make optimum use of your existing Internet connection, as every wall outlet can become an Internet access point. To do so, connect one dLAN® adapter to your Internet router or modem and a second one to the device you want to connect to the Internet.
Up
Can I configure my DS2 device to be compatible with my HomePlug Devices?
Even if some devices offer such a configuration option, tests indicate clearly that they are still not compatible with HomePlug. Particularly when they are located close to each other.
Up
Can I operate my dLAN® device with a device from another manufacturer?
All dLAN® devices conform to the HomePlug standards, HomePlug 1.0 and HomePlug AV. Other devices that conform to the same standard as your dLAN® adapter can also be operated with dLAN® adapters. You can tell when a device conforms to the HomePlug standard by these symbols on the package: HomePlug 1.0 and HomePlug AV.
Up
Are the 500 Mbps HomePlug AV adapterscompatible with the 200 Mbps adapters?
Yes, the 500 Mbps HomePlug AV products from devolo are fully compatible with the dLAN® 200 AV products.
Up
Can I combine dLAN® products in any way I choose?
Within a product family (dLAN® 200/500 AV or dLAN® 14/85 HS), you can combine devices in a network in any way you choose. However, you cannot mix the dLAN® 200/500 AV and dLAN® 14/85 HS product families. To help keep them separate, both families are colour-coded. All blue adapters of the 14/85 series work with each other and all white adapters of the 200/500 series also work with each other. You can use blue and white adapters in one mains supply network, but the white adapters will communicate with the white adapters only, and the blue adapters will communicate with other blue adapters only.
Up
Does dLAN® interfere with amateur radio or broadcast radio reception?
No. dLAN® adapters transmit data in the frequency band from 2-30 MHz with an extremely low signal strength, amateur radio frequencies in this range are not used by the dLAN® adapters.
Up
Is dLAN® allowed?
All dLAN® devices are CE certified and thus entirely legal to operate.
Up
Can dLAN® overload my power grid?
No. dLAN® adapters consume very little power and thus cannot overload the power grid.
Up
Is the electric meter a natural boundary of the dLAN® network? Can my neighbour intrude on my network?
Only in rare cases does the electric meter attenuate the signal to that extent. Therefore, for security reasons, we recommend that you always use the device's internal encryption. Enable it by entering a password other than the factory password with the included dLAN® software.
Up
How high is the maximum net data rate of the dLAN® 200 AV Adapter?
The maximum net data rate is 90-95 Mbps (UDP). The difference between it and the gross data rate results from the fact that transmission in the network includes other data, such as log data.
Up
How high is the maximum net data rate of the dLAN® 85 HS Adapter?
The maximum net data rate is approx. 45 Mbps (UDP). The difference between it and the gross data rate results from the fact that transmission in the network includes other data, such as log data.
Up
Does dLAN® work even if my house is very old?
Yes, dLAN® adapters function very well, even in old houses.
Up
My house has three separate phases. Can dLAN® also establish a connection from one phase to another?
Yes. This is known as phase coupling, and in dLAN® devices, it works without the need to install an additional phase coupler. This means that you can also establish network connections via two or three phases.
Up
Do I have to bypass my RCD device because it does not allow the dLAN® signal to pass?
No, only in rare cases do RCD devices cause minor impairments of performance. It is imperative not to bypass an RCD device, as RCD devices are there for your safety and are also prescribed by law.
Up
Does the devolo dLAN® adapter have to be plugged directly into the wall socket, or can it also be plugged into an extension or (switched) power strip?
In rare cases, power strips with integrated surge protectors can impair performance; therefore, devolo recommends plugging the dLAN® adapter directly into a wall outlet.
Up
Can I use a network switch to connect multiple devices to one dLAN® adapter?
Yes, using a switch, you can connect up to 64 network devices to one dLAN® adapter.
Up
What cable do I need to connect the dLAN® adapter to my network device?
A standard Ethernet cable is used to connect to the network device (e.g. computer, laptop, game console). This is usually part of the scope of delivery of the dLAN® adapter.
Up
Is setting up a dLAN® network complicated?
No, because dLAN® adapters are delivered from the factory already configured so that they work without further set-up. Just plug them in and you're done. An intuitive and easy-to-use software program is included, but you only need it to monitor the network and use extended functions.
Up
What devices do I need at minimum for the initial installation of a dLAN® network?
To create a dLAN® network, you need at least two dLAN® adapters (e.g. one on the Internet router and one on the computer). You can expand your network to up to 64 adapters.
Up
What does dLAN® stand for?
dLAN® stands for "direct local area network". The name already indicates how quick and easy it is to network your network components using dLAN® adapters.
