Focus on smart grid control

 

The amount of electricity from renewable energy sources from decentralised generators has been continuously growing for years. This presents network operators with significant challenges because the power being fed in is not continuously supplied as is the case for large-scale power plants. Sun and wind conditions become critical factors for network utilisation. In addition, the low-voltage level is not designed for these kinds of massive fluctuations, which can cause voltage range violations, power flow reversals, and overloads.

 

Adapting transformer stations and lines to the new load situation is not economical because the peaks in the energy network occur only briefly. Smart grid control is preferred for this reason. It relies on continuous monitoring of the low-voltage level for efficient generation and consumption management. Networking of state-of-the-art measuring and control technology prevents overload situations and enables the integration of future network components such as energy accumulators and e-mobility.

Solution

Existing infrastructure for communication

 

For efficient IP-based data communication, devolo uses the existing line network at the low-voltage level. The core advantage of this approach is that the existing line network interconnects all relevant points of the smart grid. Consequently, devolo G3-PLC Access Powerline technology enables direct communication between all sensors and actuators.

 

Successful field tests with major energy providers confirm the performance and efficiency of Powerline technology. Direct compatibility is ensured by extensive co-operation with the developers and manufacturers of monitoring software for energy suppliers.
