Scenario

Digitalisation of the distribution network

The expansion of volatile, decentralized power generators poses a major challenge to grid operators. Over 95 percent of renewables are connected to the low-voltage grid. Local storage and flexible consumption in the individual buildings make network control even more difficult. Switching to electric vehicles also threatens grid stability unless intelligent charging management is used.

At the same time, regenerative power generators, flexibly switchable consumers, controllable power storage units, heat pumps, CHP units and electric vehicles offer enormous potential for flexibilisation. Intelligently managed, they are no longer the problem in the centralized power grid, but the solution in a decentralized and smart grid!

Solution

Digital network expansion

Data communication plays a decisive role in the intelligent power grid. On the one hand for smart metering and on the other hand for smart grid scenarios, such as network status monitoring and control of network control technology. For the rollout of intelligent measuring systems, reliable and comprehensive communication is required in order to reach the meters in millions of cellars.

In addition to the mandatory rollout, which affects electricity consumers from 6,000 kWh/year, a voluntary rollout will take place. Many companies have recognized the opportunities for new services. The demand for a secure communications infrastructure for the customer will therefore be far higher than the regulatory requirement. The local network operator can use this and expand its distribution network into an ubiquitous data network.

Advantages Powerline communication:

  • high availability: All pertinent points in the power grid are reached directly.
  • 100 percent building saturation: even to the metering points in the basement
  • self-sustaining use of the system's own infrastructure: independent of the performance and availability of other networks such as GPRS/ LTE or glass fibre
  • cost-effective: No ongoing costs for data communication where power line communications are used.
  • as scalable as desired: New meters or measuring devices can be integrated at any time easily into the existing PLC network.

"We need a secure and reliable network of all players in the energy grid. And the power line as a data cable to the customer generates attractive additional revenues for the network operator."
